Airbnb: Experiencing a City Like a Local
Concept Design – Mockup
Travel isn’t just where you stay—it’s the story you bring home.
Booking a place is only the beginning. Airbnb’s “Local Story Mode” turns every trip into a living narrative — powered by authentic, community-curated insights. From hidden cafés only locals know to midnight street performances, it helps you uncover a city’s real heartbeat. Because the real journey starts after check-in.
The Origin — Searching for the “Real” Travel
This idea began during my study abroad in the UK. My friends and I stayed in more than ten Airbnbs while traveling across Europe. We had our routine — one person found restaurants, another planned the routes.
But last Christmas, something shifted. In Paris, our host home looked straight out of a movie — warm lights, soft jazz, the smell of fresh bread. Yet as we walked near Galeries Lafayette, I found myself wondering, “Where do real Parisians spend their holidays?”
While tourists queued for baguettes, locals were quietly buying a golden cake I’d never seen before — Galette des Rois, the King’s Cake. The next morning, I asked our host about it. She smiled and shared its story — a French New Year’s tradition — and pointed us to her favorite hidden bakeries and art corners around the neighborhood.
That small moment changed everything. We skipped the Eiffel Tower that day and spent it exploring quiet alleys, watching local artists paint beside the Seine. It reminded me of Airbnb’s mission: “Live like a local.” Yet I realized how often my travels had been reduced to checklists and guidebooks — efficient, but hollow.
🗺 The Real Part of Travel Is in the Exploration
Through those experiences, I realized true travel isn’t about ticking off landmarks — it’s about feeling a city. It’s the bakery that locals swear by, the late-night busker you stumble upon, the conversations you never expected.
But most travel apps only show what’s already been seen — popular spots and “Top 10” lists repeated a thousand times. What if Airbnb could go beyond that? What if it became a real travel companion — one that helps you find stories whispered by locals, not shouted by tourists?
Imagine if a platform could share the collective memory of a place — where every traveler and host leaves traces of their discoveries. A hidden mural. A late-night jazz bar. A cozy spot that feels like home. That’s where living like a local truly begins.
Airbnb × Local Story Mode
Insight
The real magic of travel isn’t the place — it’s the connection. People don’t want perfectly curated itineraries anymore; they want to discover things that feel personal, to stumble into moments that become stories.
By weaving community knowledge and real-time insights into the Airbnb experience, the app can evolve from a booking tool into a travel companion that guides you through a city’s invisible rhythm.
Solution — Local Story Mode 📍
A community-driven layer that turns every Airbnb stay into a shared local adventure.
Community Playlist 🎶
Guests can create and share “playlists” of local favorites — cafés, bookstores, galleries, hidden viewpoints — each tagged with personal notes. Future travelers can explore these lists, building on what others have found, like a collective diary of discovery.
Time-Based Tips ⏰
Get real-time notifications from locals:
“The line for this bakery is short at 9 a.m.”
“Go to this plaza at 10 p.m. — artists often perform under the old tree.”
“Avoid the upper hill after sunset — it gets dark fast.”
These tiny pieces of lived wisdom turn confusion into connection.
Interactive Map 🗺
Guests and hosts can leave pins on a shared map for murals, small parks, or quiet alleys worth wandering. It becomes a map of memories instead of landmarks.
Cultural Badge 🏅
Exploration earns recognition. Visit a set number of local spots and receive a Cultural Badge, exchangeable for booking credits. It turns curiosity into reward — and travel into a cycle of learning and sharing.
Impact
For the Traveler
The journey doesn’t end with a booking — it begins there. Airbnb becomes a companion that connects each moment, helping travelers move through cities with curiosity, safety, and a sense of belonging.
For the Business
Airbnb evolves from a transaction-based platform into a lifestyle brand that builds loyalty through shared human experience. According to Bain & Company, improving customer retention by just 5% can raise revenue by 25–95% — proof that emotional connection drives real growth.
For the Brand
This positions Airbnb not as a place to stay, but as a place to belong — a trusted guide that transforms strangers into locals, and stays into stories.
