Apple Collar: The Apple Watch for Pets
Concept Design – Mockup
The Apple Watch, Now for Your Pet.
Apple’s innovation extends to your pets. The Apple Collar monitors your pet’s health data 24/7, just like an Apple Watch, and syncs seamlessly with the iOS Health app. It completes the perfect circle of family health management — because every heartbeat, even a furry one, deserves care.
A Personal Journey — “InBody for My Pet?”
This project began during my own health journey. I was in the middle of a four-month diet, tracking my body fat every week with my InBody scale. One morning, my dog Hoho walked over as I stood on the scale, and as we made eye contact, a thought quietly crossed my mind: “What if I could measure Hoho’s body fat too?”
I’d been worried about her recent weight gain, wondering if I could manage her health more precisely — just like I did mine with my Apple Watch and InBody app. That small thought grew bigger when my watch pinged with a new health update. Just as it logs my sleep, steps, and heart rate, I wondered, “Why can’t I get this same kind of data for Hoho?”
I imagined seeing how many calories she burned on our morning walks, how far she roamed around the house while I was away, how her heart raced during playtime, and how well she slept at night. Having that kind of data could replace vague worry with real confidence — helping me care for her the way I care for myself.
Proactive Care Starts with Data
Pets can’t tell us when something’s wrong. That’s why early detection matters. The heart of this project is simple: bring the same proactive technology we use for our own health to the pets we love. Because waiting for visible symptoms often means it’s already too late.
🩺 Proactive Care, Powered by Data
Problem
Many pet health issues — from heart conditions to obesity — go unnoticed until symptoms become severe. You might notice your dog seems “a little heavier” this month, but without data, you can’t be sure how much or why. This uncertainty makes pet care reactive, not preventative.
According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), 59% of dogs and 61% of cats in the U.S. are overweight or obese. The anxiety is widespread: a 2022 Mars Petcare survey found that 70% of pet owners worry about not knowing when their pet is sick. Because pets can’t describe pain or fatigue, owners rely on guesswork — often realizing something’s wrong only when it’s too late.
Insight
Since pets can’t communicate discomfort, data must. Continuous monitoring provides the awareness they can’t express. The key insight is to translate the proactive health tracking we rely on for ourselves — sleep, movement, heart rate — into the pet world. When data replaces doubt, owners can act early with confidence instead of fear.
🐾 Solution — Apple Collar
The Apple Collar is a smart wearable that integrates seamlessly with the iOS Health ecosystem, giving every pet their own digital health companion.
Health Tracking 📈
Tracks key vitals like heart rate, activity levels, and sleep patterns, while advanced sensors monitor weight and body fat distribution. The app can alert owners if trends suggest obesity or irregular heart rhythms.
Activity Sync 🤝
Syncs automatically with the owner’s iPhone, logging shared activities like walks or playtime into a Pet Health Passport inside iOS Health — so both owner and pet can see how their lifestyles align.
Anomaly Alerts 🔔
When the system detects sudden changes — like reduced activity or elevated heart rate — it sends real-time notifications, helping owners respond before the problem escalates.
iOS Health Integration 📱
All data flows into the Pet Health Passport, serving as a unified dashboard for daily metrics, vet visits, and preventive insights. The Collar acts as the data source; the Passport becomes the living record of your pet’s wellbeing.
Impact
This solution allows owners to detect issues early, reducing costly emergency visits and improving quality of life. The American Pet Products Association (APPA) reports that the average annual vet cost for dogs is around $1,500, with emergency visits often several times higher.
By enabling preventive care, Apple not only brings peace of mind to millions of pet owners but also strengthens its identity as a brand that truly values family in all its forms.
The timing is right. The global pet wearables market — valued at $3B in 2023 — is projected to surpass $8B by 2032 (Global Market Insights). With the Apple Collar, Apple extends its ecosystem beyond people to the companions who make our lives whole. It’s more than a product — it’s a symbol of empathy through design.
