The Origin of the Project: When the Magic Paused
When I first visited Tokyo Disneyland as a kid, everything sparkled with magic — except the line.
That’s when I noticed the gap between fantasy and reality: magic on the rides, monotony while waiting.
Years later, I came across a video where Disney characters surprised shoppers with spontaneous moments of magic. I loved how it showed delight appearing in unexpected places — it was such a clever way to prove that small surprises can make ordinary moments memorable. That idea stuck with me.
So I started asking myself: “What if waiting itself could be a privilege?”
While FastPass users skip ahead, they also miss the detailed stories and designs Imagineers put into every queue. Regular lines, on the other hand, let guests experience every intention of the creators — they just need a new kind of magic to reveal them.
Since the number of guests in regular queues far exceeds FastPass users, I began to wonder:
What if we could turn the waiting process into an exciting game of collection and discovery — turning boredom into a sense of purpose and achievement?
That question became the seed of this project.
The Line Is the Adventure
Problem
Picture the line for Peter Pan’s Flight: kids shifting their feet, parents checking watches, an hour of slow steps. According to the IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions), 85% of theme park visitors cite long waits as their biggest frustration. A Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) report also found that the top emotions during waiting are boredom and irritation. What should feel magical often turns into a hallway of metal rails — and people end up remembering the waiting more than the wonder.
Insight
The key isn’t shortening the wait — it’s changing how that time feels. Disney’s strength has always been storytelling and immersion, and the queue can be its stage. By gamifying that time, we add purpose and discovery — which studies show can increase engagement by over 50% (Deloitte, 2023). This approach also uses AR to connect digital play with real-world rewards, aligning naturally with park operations and merchandise.
It’s future-proof, too: Juniper Research expects AR in entertainment to grow from $2.6B (2023) to $8B+ (2028). Families already love quests, collections, and small rewards — this concept simply channels that instinct into the most ordinary part of their day: waiting.
Solution
That’s how the Disney AR Character Hunt was born — a small digital layer that makes waiting feel alive.
Step1. AR Character Map
When you enter a line, the app’s AR map activates and shows which Disney character is “hiding” nearby. For guests in the regular queue (where FastPass isn’t available), spotting a character just 100 meters ahead builds excitement and anticipation — turning waiting into progress.
Step 2. AR Gameplay
Use your phone’s camera to find the hidden character. Once found, complete a quick mini-quiz or photo mission to collect it. Each character is added to your digital card album inside the app.
Step 3. Offline Stamp Rewards
After collecting a certain character, you earn a digital stamp — and can head to a nearby spot where a Cast Member gives you a harmless ink stamp on your hand. These stamps become a fun, physical record of your journey.
Step 4. Merch Store Stamp Kiosk
Once you complete a character set, the app unlocks a special coupon. Visit a Stamp Kiosk in a nearby merchandise store to redeem a limited-edition badge or discount. A separate “Stamp Line” ensures the process stays quick and enjoyable.
Impact
This solution changes the entire narrative of a Disney visit.
For the User
The queue turns into a mini-quest — not wasted time, but part of the adventure. The stamps on their arm become little mementos of progress, adding joy and pride to the day.
For the Park
Incentivized queues help disperse visitor traffic, easing congestion and improving flow. It also boosts app engagement and connects digital play with physical experiences.
For the Brand
It reinforces Disney’s promise that even the lines are magic. It’s a simple yet meaningful differentiator beyond FastPass — living proof of Disney’s ability to create enchantment anywhere.
For the Business
The AR Hunt draws guests toward merchandise stores, directly increasing sales.According to Statista (2023), food, beverage, and merchandise make up over 30% of total theme park revenue. It also encourages repeat visits — one day might not be enough to collect every character.
